Who can refer to the program?
Interested candidates may contact the Eating Disorder Center of Alabama for an assessment. Physicians may contact the Program Psychiatrist or the Program Director at 205-949-4550.
Will my insurance company cover treatment?
Most BlueCross BlueShield plans cover treatment; however, pre-certifications are generally required. It is best to contact someone within Alabama Psychiatric Services (APS) or the Eating Disorder Center of Alabama to verify your insurance coverage for clarification of benefits.
How long is the program?
Length of stay is based on individual needs. The average length of stay is typically 6-8 weeks.
How will my outpatient team be involved?
Patients under the care of APS providers are encouraged to continue the relationship with their therapists during the program to ensure continuity of care and appropriate discharge planning. The Eating Disorder Center of Alabama has facilities for videoconferencing with providers in the APS outlying areas. Discharge planning will begin early in the treatment process. Therefore, patients will be grounded with an outpatient therapist when ready for discharge. Patients outside the APS area will be connected with a knowledgeable, compassionate team of professionals early on, and will participate in discharge planning via telephone.
What progress can I expect from treatment?
Eating disorders are chronic illnesses; recovery is a process. However, you can expect yourself and your loved ones to develop the tools, support, and knowledge to facilitate your recovery.
What is mealtime like?
A nutritionist supervises lunch and a clinician supervises snack time. Meal support groups are designed to help patients return to normal eating behaviors while providing the nutrition needed for their bodies. The setting for mealtime is in a family-like environment. Cooking preparation groups are also part of the program, and allow patients the opportunity to learn to prepare meals under the supervision of a nutritionist.
Is family support a part of treatment?
Family therapy and education is provided as an important part of the recovery process.
